As I Am
As I Am is a literary arts initiative designed to nurture the creative growth of poets and hip-hop–rooted writers ages 18–25 who are seeking meaningful pathways into the arts. Many young artists of color experience traditional arts organizations and educational institutions as unwelcoming, undervaluing their voices, aesthetics, and cultural expressions. As I Am responds directly to this gap by creating a space where emerging writers can return, remain connected, and feel fully affirmed in their artistic identities.
Centering poetry, hip hop, and spoken word as vital literary forms, As I Am provides opportunities for young adult writers to develop their craft, present their work publicly, and participate in a community that honors the depth, innovation, and cultural significance of their artistic contributions. Poetry and hip hop continue to shape contemporary culture, and for young people from marginalized communities, these forms offer powerful tools for storytelling, healing, critical reflection, and personal agency.
Through workshops, mentorship, public readings, and performance-based literary events, As I Am uplifts emerging creative writers while expanding access to literary arts experiences that recognize and celebrate their voices. Our program affirms that the literary arts thrive when the lived experiences of young writers—especially those historically excluded—are centered, supported, and valued.
